Portillo's Hot Dogs, Beef, Beer

review by Ron P.

The first Portillo's hot dog stand known as "The Dog House" opened in 1963 on North Avenue in Villa Park, Illinois and oh, man am I glad they have decided to open a location in Orange County.

Portillo's menu consists of mainly burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches, however they also have gourmet salads, chicken strips and a few other choice items. Click here for a menu.

Though I have not tried a lot of the food options on their menu, I will tell you that they have the absolute best Italian beef sandwiches I have ever tasted. When ordering the Italian beef you will have a choice of hot or sweet peppers (the hot peppers really set this sandwich off, amazing) I also recommend adding mozzarella cheese for the perfect compliment. You also have a choice of having your sandwich dry (very little meat juice), extra (where they splash a bit of meat juice on the sandwich) or dipped (the sandwich is dipped in the meat juice, excellent).

Being that Portillo's is famous for their hot dogs I had to give them a try. Not that I was disappointed, but I have had better hot dogs at other places. Although, I would place their hot dogs in the top 5 that I have had.

I also love onion rings, however when getting my order I was a little disappointed with the onion rings. This is probably due to my tastes as I like good sized, beer-battered onion rings and they serve smaller, crunchier, fast food style onion rings.

Back to the Italian beef sandwich. I was so impressed that I will go back to Portillo's again and again and try their different food items (only problem is that it is going to be hard to keep myself from ordering the Italian beef).

The atmosphere is a 20's themed look and feel and is usually packed with people. That being said, the service is absolutely amazing considering the crowds they have to cater to. I was able to order and receive my food within about 10 minutes while the restaurant was completely packed.

According to the their website Portillo's had won so many Silver Platter awards (the "Oscars" of the food industry) that the company retired from competition for 5 years to give others a chance. Pay a visit to Portillo's and see if you agree.

All in all I absolutely recommend Portillo's. The food and service is great, the place has a great atmosphere (including an outdoor patio) and is kept very clean and the pricing is more than fair.
